Week 1: 2D

Sources of Information for 2D Design

2D means two dimensions (length x width), so 2D design is designing images, etc, on a flat surface. This can be done through digital mediums such as Photoshop and Illustrator or through more traditional methods such as painting on canvas or drawing on paper.
Information and inspiration for 2D design can be sourced from many different and unsuspecting places!

I have listed these as I have thought of them, so in a way it's a list from the most obvious sources, to the more obscure:

  • Internet
The internet is fast becoming one of the most accessible sources for information. With the many different search engines now available, honing in on specific information can be a very quick process. Even if you are not after something specific, just browsing the web can be a tremendous source of inspiration for 2D design. Below are links to popular websites and search engines commonly used.
  • Books/Magazines
Books are an age old source for information. Before the internet, they were one of the most common mediums to reference. There can be whole books/magazines devoted to any one subject, such as 2D Design. Libraries are a great place to start when looking for informational books/magazines, as are bookshops, both online and off.

  • Other people’s ideas/Conversations/Blogs
Speaking or listening to people in "the know" is often a great way to get first hand information about your subject. For 2D design it would be of great benefit to speak to people in the graphic design or print industries, for example. Similarly, reading blogs written by people with experience in the relevant industries would be of great help. Websites such as Ted (listed below) allow anybody to be able to access and watch industry greats speak about what they do best. For example, graphic designer Milton Glaser presents a very interesting talk on the processes he uses to create some of his works.
  • Media/TV/Advertisements
An ever evolving platform to which we are often exposed to whether we like it or not. Whether intentionally or subconsciously, we pick up on elements that interest us, which can be used as a source of information for 2D design.
  • Personal Observation
Where ever you are, or what ever you are doing, information/inspiration can often find its way to you!
  • Art Galleries
  • Cityscapes/Buildings/Architecture
Information for 2D design is all around us, literately. Our environment is made up of many elements which can be used in designing. We only have to stop and look.
  • Nature
  • Typography/Signs
  • Music/Video clips
A continual source for creativity and experimentation.
  • Design Agencies
Agencies can always give us a great indication of current design trends.
